streamling production

Objective: production efficiency

QuikMag

Quiksilver was looking to streamline the creation of its digital and print catalogs to shorten turn around times, save money in production and create more consistency in design templates.

Three part strategy

1. Consistent information delivery

2. Creation of automated templates

3. Guidelines for artwork and photography

1. Consistent information delivery

I worked with product managers within the three brands owned by Quiksilver (Quiksilver, Roxy, DC Shoes) to standardize the information delivery for catalog building. By communicating with different departments and understanding their needs, we were able to create a universal template that could be exported from the respective PLM (Product Lifestyle Management) programs. Allowing product managers to deliver information directly to the catalog reduced mistakes made through information transfer.

2. Creation of automated templates

We used the Indesign plugin EasyCatalog to automate information delivery into the re-designed catalog templates. By writing scripts in EasyCatalog’s proprietary language, the information coming from the PLM managers automatically formatted correctly in the catalog layout. I created a library of templates for all different product types (print and digital) that could easy be pulled into a Indesign project and utilized. With the data setup correctly, EasyCatalog chose the correct template and formatted the information automatically.

In addition, we standardized the folder structure of all projects, which made finding assets much easier. With hundreds of images in each catalog, a lot of time could be wasted trying to find missing images. By creating a default workflow, it minimized missing assets and increased productivity.

3. Guidelines for artwork and photography

I worked with the photographic department and each brand’s marketing department to standardize the way graphic assets were delivered. This allowed to creation of renaming and resizing scripts through Illustrator and Photoshop that speed up the preparing of assets for production. By establishing a consistent naming convention for all assets, we could use automate the placement of images into the Indesign templates.

Results: Catalog Production time was reduced

  1. Asset Preparation time shortened significantly
  2. Organization of assets improved resulting in cleaner file structures that took up less space on the server
  3. Production time and ability to adapt to last minute requests improved
  4. Production artists were able to focus more on the management of the projects than the time consuming micro-edits
